House Mother / House Father / House Lead: London, Ontario
“House Leads” fill a role that is a cross between foster parent and mentor. House leads are generally in their 20s or 30s. They live with and are responsible for the day to day lives and care of 1-3 teenagers in one of Five/Fourteen’s family style homes. Think Blanca from Pose.
Youth in our House program are generally late teens who have experienced homelessness or family breakdowns due to their sexual or gender identity. They are coming into the care system for the first time and are not looking for a traditional “new family” relationship of foster homes but fear for their safety in group homes. They need a safe home and chosen family to support them and help connect them to our LGBTQ2S community while preparing them for a supported transition to independence.
Five/Fourteen provides a fully-furnished four-bedroom home for the House Lead to move into and take on this caregiver role.
This role is to provide supervision, education support, and life skills training to youth, in the foster home and in the community, working with Five/Fourteen staff and the youths’ children’s aid society social workers.
This role includes accompanying youth to appointments and activities, in your personal vehicle or on public transit. A reliable car and proof of adequate car insurance coverage is preferred but not required.
This is a fostering role, requiring dedication and patience, and providing immeasurable rewards. Compensation includes housing and $50 per day for each youth living in the home (maximum of three youth).
This role requires a clear vulnerable sector police clearance.
The house lead:
- Lives full-time in a Five/Fourteen home and provides daily support to Five/Fourteen clients;
- Provides assistance with skill-building related to activities of daily living, e.g., cooking, housekeeping, laundry, budgeting, shopping;
- Maintains cleanliness and upkeep of the home;
- Helps clients develop and maintain daily routines;
- Provides motivation for the client in completing elements of their daily routing, e.g., homework, exercise, cooking, housekeeping;
- Helps plan daily and weekly schedules of activities, including academic work, goal-setting, mindfulness activities, positivity exercises, life skills instruction, physical activity, cultural activities, and relaxation;
- Administers and tracks client medications;
- Participates in care plan development for each youth;
- Provides appropriate referrals, information and advocacy to other support services to assist clients to meet the goals and objectives identified in care plans;
- Resolves client complaints and mediates client conflicts, and/or collaborates with Five/Fourteen staff for same;
- Develops and maintains open communication while developing and maintaining appropriate boundaries with clients;
- Maintains a safe and secure environment at all times;
- Provides clients with transportation to and from appointments and/or assists clients with using public transportation;
- Maintains open lines of communication with client, and Five/Fourteen staff and completes necessary paperwork and record keeping, including medication tracking;
- Maintains confidentiality of all client and company information.
- There is no minimum formal education requirement; lived experience in foster care is a significant asset.
- Education and work experience in Child and Youth Care, Personal Support Worker, Social Service Worker, Social Work, Psychology, or related field is an asset.
- Very strong preference for candidates who identify as LGBTQ or Two-Spirit;
- Very strong preference for candidates with lived experience of housing precariousness or in the foster care system;
- Preference for candidates with experience working with LGBTQ2S youth or providing life skills development to youth or young adults;
- Must have are clear, recent vulnerable sector service police background check prior to beginning work;
- Preference for knowledge of trauma-informed practice;
- Solid crisis management skills;
- Strong time management, organizational, and prioritizing skills; and an ability to coach others in improving these skills;
- Comfort using a computer and smartphone;
- Interpersonal sensitivity and the ability to work with multiple learning and practice styles;
- Analytical thinking with a demonstrated ability to evaluate critically, reason strategically, and make sound decisions;
- Belief in and commitment to collaborative work models, and the ability to function independently within a strong team;
- Commitment to social justice and equity;
- Ontario has a legal requirement that candidates be at least 21 years of age;
- Ability to maintain standards of confidentiality, respecting client privacy while sharing information necessary for the delivery of clients’ care.

Leads are provided with rent-free housing and $50 per day per youth in the home to cover most household expenses. Youth clothing, healthcare, haircuts, weekly allowance, and other expenses are covered separately by Five/Fourteen.

Since 2016, Five/Fourteen, Inc. has been providing housing, services, and support to homeless and housing precarious Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans*, Queer, Two-Spirit, and gender-independent Ontario teenagers.
Five/Fourteen is an independent agency with established relationships and partnerships with social service agencies, the Government of Ontario, and university research centres.
